Advanced Care Program: Ostomy
Emptying Ostomy Pouches
Drainable and urostomy pouches should be emptied when they are 1/3 to ½ full. Closed ostomy pouches should be replaced and disposed of when they are 1/3 to ½ full. Normally you will have to empty your pouch anywhere from 1 to 6 times per day. Emptying your pouch regularly helps to prevent leakage and a bulge under your clothing from a full pouch.
Do not let your pouch overfill!
Tips to make emptying easier:
- When placing the pouch on, angle it toward the inside of your leg for easier emptying
- Always empty the pouch when it is 1/3 to ½ full
- Remove the clamp and direct the spout into the toilet while in a sitting position
- Flushing the toilet while emptying can help prevent splash-back
- Clean the spout thoroughly after emptying. A moist towelette may be used
- Use an odor eliminator if you are concerned about odors when emptying the pouch
- It is not necessary to rinse out the pouch each time you empty the pouch
- Save the pouch clamp
- Always have extra clamps available
