Advanced Care Program: Ostomy
Odor Control
Odor is a common concern of many people with an ostomy. Today, most ostomy pouches are made with an odor barrier film so that odor from the stool is contained inside the pouch. If the pouch is clean and is properly applied, you should not notice an odor until you are emptying or changing your pouch. If you notice odor at any other time, check the seal for leakage.
To help prevent odor problems:
- Empty your pouch on a regular basis to reduce the risk of leakage. Usually one to three times a day.
- Make sure your pouch is applied properly.
- Limit or avoid foods that increase odor, such as broccoli, asparagus, eggs, cauliflower
- Limit or avoid foods that cause gas, such as beans, beer, carbonated beverages
- Use a few drops of odor eliminator in the pouch.
Some medications can also affect the odor of the stool. If you have questions about medications that you are taking, see your healthcare professional. If you experience recurrent leaks around the pouch or skin barrier, see your healthcare professional.
