Advanced Care Program: Incontinence

Treatments for Incontinence

Incontinence is a symptom, not a disease. It is treatable. In fact, approximately 80% of incontinent individuals can be treated to eliminate or significantly reduce incontinent episodes.

There are a number of options available to treat incontinence, including:
  • Behavioral techniques such as scheduled toileting, bladder retraining, and pelvic floor exercises.
  • Muscle therapy which includes biofeedback and electrical stimulation.
  • Devices such as pessaries, urethral inserts, and urine seals.
  • Medications can be prescribed by your physician to control incontinence.
  • Surgical procedures such as bladder neck suspension, sling procedures, and collagen injections. Note: All non-surgical procedures should be attempted before deciding on surgery.
  • Weight loss. Sometimes extra weight can cause bladder control problems.

Many people have bladder control problems. It is not a normal part of aging and can be treated. Do not let embarrassment prevent you from seeking medical help. See you healthcare professional to discuss which treatment options are best to treat your incontinence.
