Advanced Care Program: Incontinence

Pelvic Floor Stimulation

Incontinence is a symptom, not a disease. Therefore, it is treatable. In fact, approximately 80% of incontinent individuals can be treated to eliminate or significantly reduce incontinent episodes.

Your pelvic floor muscles act like a hammock that supports your bladder and other internal organs. If this muscle is weakened due to surgery, childbirth, or aging, you are more likely to experience leakage of urine as the bladder loses its support structure. Rehabilitating this muscle will help prevent urine loss.

One form of treatment for stress, urge, and mixed incontinence is pelvic floor stimulation. Pelvic floor stimulation offers a highly successful, low risk, and cost effective method to treat incontinence.

Pelvic floor stimulation helps bladder control:
  • Pelvic floor stimulation delivers electric pulses via a sensor to induce pelvic floor contractions.
  • These contractions help strengthen the pelvic floor muscle which supports the bladder and urinary sphincter which controls urine flow.
  • Daily contraction of the muscle increases strength and endurance.

Pelvic floor stimulation offers long term treatment with little side effects. Treatments can be conducted in your physician’s office or there are portable electrical stimulation units which can be used in the privacy of your home. These home units are covered by Medicare Part B.

See your physician to determine if pelvic floor stimulation is the right treatment for your incontinence.
