Advanced Care Program: Paralysis

Recognizing and Preventing Urinary Tract Infections

Individuals who must use catheters to empty their bladders are more likely to get bacteria into their bladders or kidneys. This can develop into a urinary tract infection, (UTI).

One or more of the following symptoms may indicate you have a UTI:
  • Autonomic dysreflexia
  • Blood in urine
  • Burning feeling in the urethra, penis, or pubic area
  • Chills
  • Feeling the need to catheterize immediately
  • Feeling the need to catheterize more often
  • Fever
  • Foul smelling urine
  • Headache
  • Increase in urinary frequency
  • Increased spasms of legs, abdomen, or bladder
  • Leakage or voiding between catheterizations
  • Low back pain
  • Nausea
  • Sediment or mucus in the urine
By doing the following you may reduce your chances of a UTI:
  • Change clothing as soon as they become wet or soiled
  • Do not place your catheter on surfaces that are not clean or sterile
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Empty your bladder at the intervals prescribed by your doctor - this will help you maintain lower bladder pressures
  • Keep skin clean and dry
  • Use a sterile catheter for each catheterization
  • Wash and/or clean around the urethra before each catheterization
  • Wash hands thoroughly before and after each catheterization

If you are experiencing urinary tract infections more than once a year, ask your Advanced Medical Group customer service representative or sales representative about products that have a lower incidence of UTI's. We can discuss your product needs with your doctor and develop a plan that may help you reduce your UTI's and avoid costly hospitalizations and/or lost wages from being sick.

If you develop a fever or have one or more of the above symptoms - call or see your doctor. Do not self-medicate for a UTI, contact your doctor to ensure a proper diagnosis is made and appropriate treatment is prescribed and for the proper duration. Do not start and stop antibiotics without consulting your doctor.
