Skin Care
The skin is the largest organ in the human body. It protects you from bacteria, dirt, ultraviolet rays of the sun, and it contains the nerve endings for sensation. The skin also plays a key role in regulating the body’s fluids and temperature.
To keep your skin healthy, you should practice the following:
- Avoid bumping into things when transferring
- Avoid excessive exposure to the sun - use an effective sunscreen
- Avoid excessive temperatures, hot or cold
- Avoid items that may dry the skin such as harsh soaps
- Avoid soaps labeled "antibacterial" or "antimicrobial"
- Avoid tight fitting clothes, tight shoes or socks that bind
- Avoid using talcum powders which can support yeast growth
- Breaks or tears in the skin require immediate attention and care
- Change clothing as soon as they become wet or soiled
- Eat a well-balanced diet and maintain adequate fluid intake
- Elevate hands, legs, and feet frequently if you notice any swelling
- Immediately clean any urine or stool that may come in contact with the skin
- Inspect or have someone inspect skin for possible skin tears or breaks in skin, pay close attention to boney prominences for skin breakdown
- Keep the skin clean and dry
